At the start of this year someone will ask you about guidance and direction from God for their life like:

"Should I get married this year - I met this guy and he's so cute!?"

"Should we have another child this year - we've got 10 already!?

"Should I move to Antarctica this year - I heard it's nice there this time of year!?"

"Should I get a facelift this year - I'm getting some wrinkles, and I want to look like Angelina Jolie!?"

"Should I get a new job this year - I don't like my workmates!?"

So, when someone asks you about guidance and direction from God for their life and you answer them – Just Don’t Say Anything Weird

Before we go any further, I just want to say that the unbelieving world already thinks that you’re weird and that’s OK because they thought that Jesus was weird too!

Mark 3: 20-21 One time Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon He and his disciples couldn’t even find time to eat. When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take Him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said.’

Another time, Jesus was casting out demons from the sick and some of the people said about Him, John 10: 20 ‘(He’s) out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?’

That’s actually a really good question isn’t it, ‘Why listen to a man like that?’ - Jesus gave us the answer to that question when He said in another place, Mark 3: 28 “I tell you the truth”

Matthew 23: 16; 2 Corinthians 4: 4; John 8:12, 2; Corinthians 4: 3-4

Now generally speaking your fellow Christians don’t think you’re weird, but they will think you’re weird if you say weird things in answer to their questions about guidance and direction from God for their lives in 2026

The reason some Christians say weird things is because they get their ideas from watching movies or reading about something on the internet

Here’s 5 examples of some of the weird things that some Christians say concerning guidance and direction from God

1. “Follow Your Heart”

Saying to someone, ‘follow your heart’ is just weird considering what the Word of God says in, Jeremiah 17: 9The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?’

Jesus never said, ‘follow your heart’, but He did say, John 1: 43 ‘Follow Me’ which requires us to surrender the guidance and direction of our lives to Him

Matthew 9: 9; Mark 1: 17; Luke 5: 27

2. “Believe in Yourself”

Saying to someone, ‘believe in yourself’ is just weird considering what the Word of God says in, Romans 11: 20bdon’t think highly of yourself’

Jesus never said, ‘believe in yourself’, but He did say, John 4: 21a ‘Believe Me’,

He said 'Believe Me’ to a woman whom He met at a well and had asked her for a drink of water. She believed in herself so much that she had 5 failed marriages.

Illustration: Jennifer and I were in Israel 2022 at the Jordan River. A couple that we met there asked me if I would water baptize her in the river. We asked her about her Christian commitment, and she told us that she had been married 4 times and the guy she was now with was not her husband. I politely declined to water baptize her.

Believing in Jesus requires us to surrender the guidance and direction of our lives to Him

John 3: 16; John 14: 1; John 11: 25-26

3. “Do What Makes You Happy”

Saying to someone, ‘Do what makes you happy’ is just weird considering what the Word of God says in, Ecclesiastes 2: 11as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.’

Who said that – It was Solomon, the king who had everything that could ever make you happy but lost it all because he forgot God!?

Jesus never said, ‘Do what makes you happy’, but He did say, Matthew 6: 33b ‘Always do what God shows you is right. Then He will also give you the things that you need each day.’, which requires us to surrender the guidance and direction of our lives to Him

Proverbs 21: 3; James 4: 17

4. “Live Your Truth”

Saying to someone, ‘Live your truth’ is just weird considering what the Word of God says in, Judges 21: 25beach person did whatever seemed right in his own opinion’ ISV

This verse described the time in Israel’s history when the people were in great rebellion against God

Jesus never said, ‘Live your truth’, but He did say, John 14: 6 ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’, which requires us to surrender the guidance and direction of our lives to Him

John 8: 32; John 17: 17

5. “Follow Jesus and you won't have trouble”

Saying to someone, ‘Follow Jesus and you won't have trouble’ is just weird considering what the Word of God says in, James 1: 2a 'remember to be happy, even when many kinds of trouble happen to you.’

Jesus never said, ‘Follow Me and you won't have trouble’, but He did say, Luke 9: 23 ‘If any of you wants to be My follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow Me.’, which requires us to surrender the guidance and direction of our lives to Him

John 15: 20; John 16: 33

Let me remind you that at the start of this year someone will ask you about guidance and direction from God for their life, so when you answer them – Just Don’t Say Anything Weird

In 2026 let’s, Ephesians 4: 15b ‘speak the truth (just don’t say anything weird) in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of His Body, the Church.’

Acts 26: 24-25
