David was also a ‘type’ of Christ

Imprinted in David, God was foreshadowing His promise to love His people through Jesus Christ

When David was just a young man, he was anointed by Samuel the Prophet to be the 2nd King of Israel (1010 BC) and reigned for 40 years until his death (970 BC) at the age of 70 years old

1 Samuel 16: 13; 2 Samuel 2: 4; 2 Samuel 5: 4-5; 1 Kings 2: 11

The name ‘David’ means loved, and David was loved by everyone

In the beginning, David was loved by his predecessor King Saul 1 Samuel 16: 21

David was loved by King Saul’s son Jonathan 1 Samuel 18: 1, 3; 1 Samuel 20: 17

David was loved by King Saul’s attendants 1 Samuel 18: 22

David was loved by King Saul’s daughter Michal (pronounced Mee-Khal) who later became his wife 1 Samuel 18: 20, 27, 28

David was loved by all Israel and Judah 1 Samuel 18: 16

And David was especially loved by God according to Solomon’s prayer, 1 Kings 3: 6 “You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne’”.

2 Chronicles 1: 8; 2 Chronicles 6: 42; Psalm 18: 50; Psalm 51: 1; Psalm 89: 49

The Lord especially loved David because he was a 1 Samuel 13: 14 ‘man after (God’s) His own heart’

Acts 13: 22

So, in what way was David a ‘type’ of Christ and what likenesses to Christ do we see imprinted in David?

Firstly, the Prophet Isaiah said that, Isaiah 16: 5 ‘God will establish one of David’s descendants as king. He will rule with mercy and truth. He will always do what is just and be eager to do what is right’.

And as the Lord loved David, He sent David’s great descendant Jesus Christ our Lord to save us, Romans 5: 8 ‘But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.’

Ephesians 1: 7 ‘(God) purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.’

Next, so strong is the imprint of God’s promise in David the Christ ‘type’, that Jesus was called the ‘Son of David’

Matthew 9: 27; Matthew 12: 23

Jesus was the ‘Son of David’ and the son of Joseph who was a descendant of David through Solomon

Matthew 1: 6, 16; Luke 3: 23

However, Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus because Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary, Joseph’s betrothed wife

Matthew 1: 18

Mary was though the biological mother of Jesus and although not explicitly stated in the Scriptures, but by implication and tradition, Mary was probably the descendant of David through David’s other son Nathan

Genesis 3: 15 ‘seed of the woman’ NKJV; Galatians 3: 16; Luke 1: 32; Acts 2: 30; Romans 1: 3

As for being the ‘Son of David’, Jesus said, Mark 12: 35-37a ‘“Why do the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David? For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’ Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”’

Psalm 110: 1

Good question, isn’t it?

So, as Jesus said, “Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”

Does anyone here know the answer?

The answer is this; humanly speaking, Jesus was the ‘Son of David, being David’s descendant through both Joseph and Mary who were the descendants of Solomon and Nathan, the sons of David

But Jesus was more than just the ‘Son of David’, as He said, He is also David’s Lord and Creator, Revelation 22: 16 (Jesus said) ‘I am both the Source and the Descendant of David and the Heir to his throne’ NLT & VOICE (Combination)

Isaiah 16: 5; Acts 13: 23

Next, both David and Jesus were born in the small town of Bethlehem in Judah

1 Samuel 17: 58; Micah 5: 2; Luke 2: 4, 11; John 7: 42

Next, David was Israel’s greatest king

1 Kings 1: 47; Jeremiah 33: 17; 2 Chronicles 13: 5; Acts 13: 22

But Jesus Christ is the, Revelation 19: 16 ‘King of all kings and Lord of lords’

Next, David’s life was threatened by the mad King Saul

1 Samuel 19: 15

And likewise, Jesus' life was threatened by King Herod Antipas the son of the mad king Herod the Great

Luke 13: 31-32 ‘At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!” Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose”’.

Next, one of the most amazing typological likenesses between David and the Lord Jesus was when David was betrayed by one of those closest to him, his own son Absolom. To escape Absolom, David descended from Jerusalem, Psalm 48: 2 ‘the city of the great King’ and crossed over the Kidron Valley, as David called it, Psalm 23: 4 ‘the valley of the shadow of death’, before ascending the Mt. Of Olives on the other side, weeping as he went

2 Samuel 15: 13-16, 23, 30

And when Jesus descended from the Mt. Of Olives He crossed over the Kidron Valley, Psalm 23: 4 ‘the valley of the shadow of death’, before ascending the other side and entering Jerusalem, Matthew 5: 35 ‘the city of the great King’, weeping as He went on the way to His betrayal by one of those closest to him, Judas one of His own 12 disciples

Luke 19: 28-31, 35-37, 41

Following the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was tried by the Jewish Religious Leaders, and condemned to die by the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate, but it was through Christ’s death on the cross that God’s promise to save us was fulfilled, Ephesians 5: 2 'He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us’

Have you received the promise of God’s love that was first foreshadowed in David and fulfilled in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross?

2 Corinthians 1: 20a ‘For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ’
